Corpus Christi Public Libraries was awarded $75,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a competitive Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) grant program. This grant enabled the creation of a community sensory room at La Retama Central Library for children with special needs from infants up to age 14.

Children with special needs and their parents, caregivers, therapists, and teachers will have access to a soothing sensory experience at the La Retama Central Library. The new community sensory room is the first free public space in the Coastal Bend region to cater to this underserved population.

The sensory room will consist of areas with education and recreation opportunities and include therapeutic equipment such as soft play equipment, bubble tubes, and interactive wall panels to create an immersive sensory experience.

The Library Department will introduce sensory programs, activities, collections, and presentation sessions geared toward children and their caregivers in conjunction with the community sensory room. Coastal Bend Professionals who work with special needs children have offered their support to this project.

The sensory room is anticipated to open in March 2024.
