First Public Sensory Room in South Texas Region

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – A free public sensory room designed for children with special needs is now available at the La Retama Central Library, located at 805 Comanche Street. The sensory room is the first in the South Texas region.

Children up to age 14, together with their parents, caregivers, therapists, and teachers, will have access to state-of-the-art therapeutic stations and sensory tools, including an interactive calming station, an adjustable sound-activated light-up wall panel, and SensaSoft tumble play rollers.

The Sensory Room was made possible by $75,000 awarded to Corpus Christi Public Libraries from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a competitive Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) grant program. In addition, $11,000 in private funding has been donated to the Friends of Corpus Christi Public Libraries for supplemental resources geared toward sensory-friendly programs and events.

“Our goal is to offer these families an enjoyable and therapeutic setting for their children,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “This space aims to help build a community of support and understanding where families can connect and engage in educational workshops led by professionals specializing in children with special needs.”

Beginning in May, a monthly speaker series will launch targeting caregivers raising children with sensory processing disorders. Topics presented by area professionals will include recognizing signs and symptoms that your child has a sensory processing disorder, calming strategies, and available community resources.

The La Retama Sensory Room will be available for reservations beginning on Friday, March 1, by calling 361-826-7000.
