A South Texas company known for powerlifting suits and wraps has shifted to manufacturing masks to help protect against the coronavirus.
“We’re trying to put our resources back into the community and give that support that people really need right now,” Titan Support Systems Inc. sales associate Matt Craig told the Corpus Christi Caller Times
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has gone on record in stating that looser-fitting surgical face masks “are an acceptable alternative” to N95 masks for front-line health care workers.
Company officials said production of the masks has already commenced, with 100 samples of a testing phase already being designed. The company added special spandex that is already on hand to produce the masks, which will be washable and reusable.
With the capacity to produce up to 1,600 masks a day, Craig said the company looked up guidelines on the CDC website and consulted with local medical professionals on the design upon deciding to enter into the business.
Craig added the masks will be given to local hospitals to test and to the families of its employees along with being offered up for sale to the public.
“We’re trying to keep our families employed,” he said of the company’s roughly 40 employees. “We’re doing the best we can at this time of crisis.”
With the virus showing few signs of slowing, President Donald Trump recently extended the country’s national social-distancing regulations through April. Top medical officials have estimated as many as 100,000 to 240,000 Americans could die from the virus.
