While there are concerns about local government’s impact on the Port of Corpus Christ's future, community leaders such as Robert R. Furgason, president emeritus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, see potential.
In a letter Furgason wrote to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, he said leadership will continue to provide for the future rather than waste funding the port generates. He said his sense is the port will have the “foresight” to plan for the future and still be able to give back in investments.
Furgason highlighted several entities that are worthy of investment including his school, which operates the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network and the National Spill Control School.
Another entity Furgason highlighted was Del Mar College. The college has just completed a chemical processing technology lab that will provide training for other industries and offers good-paying jobs.
Furgason also highlighted the Texas State Aquarium, which is undergoing an expansion. The aquarium offers training in rescuing animals from environmental disasters.
