The COVID-19 crisis has hindered the air travel industry, and officials say Corpus Christi International Airport has suffered immensely.
According to KRIS-TV News, the Corpus Christi City Council will receive a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration that will provide some relief. The grant is for more than $6.5 million and is a part of the CARES Act that is designed to help businesses amid hardships caused by the coronavirus lockdown. The money will be spread out over a three-year period.
Airports across the country are receiving grants like this to provide economic relief caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Kevin Smith, CCIA'a assistant director of aviation, says the airport is already expecting a loss of almost $2 million for the 2020 budget.
"We anticipate just under $2 million shortfall in our budget this year due to everything, " Smith told KRIS. "You can see the parking lot that's normally full right now and that's our third-largest revenue stream so we know we're gonna take a loss this year and hopefully, it will be no more than $1.9 million."
