Construction on the portion of South Staples Street between Baldwin Boulevard and Kostoryz Road in Corpus Christi is scheduled to begin soon.
The improvement project on the less than a mile stretch of roadway is expected to almost a year and a half beginning in January. It will include new concrete pavement, sidewalks, handicap accessible ramps, upgraded traffic signals, and utility improvements such as new water mains and storm sewers. Seven bus stops and a bus pull-in will be rebuilt and have new shelter pads, too.
The City Council awarded the $13.4 million project to Bay Ltd., according to a news release on the city's website. The project will be paid for from the 2018 Bond Program.
This stretch of road was initially built in 1891. The most recent overlay was finished 40 years ago with a seal coat done in 1994. The existing infrastructure and underground utilities are roughly seven decades old, and will be replaced during the project.
