CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – At today’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the Council approved an amendment to an agreement with Corpus Christi Renewables (CCR) to allow for the capture of landfill gas at the J.C. Elliott Landfill. The gas will be sent to the CCR processing facility at the Cefé Valenzuela Landfill to create renewable natural gas. CCR will pay the City $1.8 million to install and maintain the gas transmission pipeline between the landfills.  

In May 2023, the City approved a Landfill Gas and Lease Agreement with CCR to convert landfill gas at the Cefe Valenzuela Landfill into renewable natural gas to be sold to a local natural gas pipeline. The processing facility became operational in early October.  

Today’s agreement is expected to save the City over $200,000 annually in maintenance costs at the J.C. Elliott Landfill, where the landfill gas is destroyed through a flaring system.   

"Today's amendment approval marks a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainable energy solutions,” Mayor Guajardo said. “By capturing landfill gas and converting it into renewable natural gas, we are not only reducing maintenance costs but also contributing to a cleaner environment for our community."
