There were 1,601 Black students enrolled in Nueces County schools in the 2021-22 school year, 5.3% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Nueces County welcomed 56,514 students during the 2021-22 school year. Among them, Black comprised 2.8% of the student body to be the third most represented ethnicity in the county.

Among the 105 schools in Nueces County, Roy Miller High School and Metro School of Design recorded the highest enrollment of Black students in the 2021-22 school year, with a total of 84 students.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
